The Top 5 Shells to Find on LBI

Hey there, shell seekers! It’s me, Shelly the Seagull, and I’ve spent more time on the sandy shores of Long Beach Island than just about anyone. I’ve seen A LOT of shells, and today I’m going to share my Top 5 favorite ones to find when you’re walking the beach. Grab your bucket and keep your eyes open—there’s treasure waiting beneath your toes!

1. Scallop Shells

These beauties are shaped like a fan and come in all kinds of pretty colors—white, pink, orange, even purple if you’re lucky! Scallop shells are easy to spot because they have ridges that look like little sun rays. Perfect for decorating sandcastles or turning into a necklace for your favorite seagull (hint hint).

2. Moon Snail Shells

Round and swirly, these look like they belong in a pirate’s treasure chest! They’re smooth and often gray, blue, or tan. I call them “shiny spirals of happiness”—and they’re my favorite to roll down sand dunes (don’t tell anyone).

3. Clam Shells

Classic and common—but still super fun! Clam shells are great for scooping sand or collecting tiny treasures. Look for ones that are unbroken and match the two halves. If you find a perfect pair, you just have to make a wish!

4. Whelk Shells

Now THESE are exciting. Whelks are big, twisty shells with long points and deep spirals. Sometimes people call them conchs, but they’re a little different. If you find one of these, congratulations—you’re officially a Shelling Star.

5. Sand Dollars

Rare, delicate, and totally magical! Sand dollars are flat and round with a star-like pattern on top. They’re not technically “shells,” but you’ll feel like you’ve discovered buried treasure if you find one. Just be gentle—they’re fragile and special.

What kinds of shells have you found on LBI? Send me an email, I’d love to see some pictures of your favorite finds.
